I’m planning my first backpacking trip and trying to keep my pack light. I’ve heard hammocks are smaller and easier to carry than tents. Do you find hammocks really save space and weight, or do the extra straps and tarps cancel that out? Thanks everyone!!

b0ppard, The best way to think of it is your hammock setup will weigh/pack about as much as your tent setup. But for many people, the hammock is much more comfortable. Note that on either side, tent or hammock, more money can be spent on lighter, more refined gear.

Another aspect is the camping area. If you are on a hike to a known campground - like established locations along a Thru-Hike - those areas have usually been cleared of ground debris, and trees have been removed. They are "tent-friendly". But if you are hiking along a trail, and want the freedom to stop where you want, and not worry so much about level ground or roots and rocks and pine cones, the hammock is a better choice.
