A nest of ground wasps just set up shop right between my two favorite hammock trees. I’m dying to hang out and chill tonight, and I'm this close to just nuking the nest so I can get my spot back

Give me a solid reason why I shouldn't just go for it?

or better yet, how do I deal with them without turning my backyard into a war zone?

I get the temptation, but those little guys can swarm fast if the nest gets hit hard. If you want your hang spot back without chaos, wait until after dark when they’re inactive and use a long‑range spray or call a pro.

I had some yellow jackets starting to build a nest at an inconvenient spot along a fence. Using a hose with a variable spray nozzle, I "explained" to them that their location was subject to a light "rain". When that didn't work, the rain became a downpour. Eventually, it was a full force Typhoon that washed away the nest. All this was done from a distance. If not using a Pro, I'd at least call one and have a chat over the phone. I've found that often the experts gladly give small advice over the phone, generating good-will, which will inspire you to call them for larger projects in the future.
