It's that time of the year! I love Halloween and what i enjoy the most are reading ghost stories. Do you have any Campfire ghost stories that you can share? Tell us more about it. Bonus points for photos!

Shall we start with the classic?

A fellow and his date pulled into their favorite “lovers’ lane” to listen to the radio and do a little necking. The music was interrupted by an announcer who said there was an escaped convict in the area who had served time for rape and robbery. He was described as having a hook instead of a right hand. The couple became frightened and drove away. When the boy took his girl home, he went around to open the car door for her. Then he saw — a bloody hook on the door handle!

This isn't so much of a ghost story, but it was spooky. When I was on the Oregon PCT, I'd hike all day and by the time I'd turn in - my shelter was a Gore-Tex® bivi bag - I'd just enter and sleep. But one night, near the headwaters of the Rouge River, I stopped early. I fixed dinner and sat around as dusk turned to night. As I looked out beyond my camp area, I swear I could see eyes at various heights above the ground, looking back at me. And I could hear twigs snapping. I was sure I was being surrounded. I didn't sleep well, if at all, that night, and I never "waited as darkness arrived" again for the rest of the journey.

Ah, quite scary! Eyes at different heights? That’s next-level eerie. That might have been deer, raccoons, maybe even elk? but in the dark, your brain fills in the blanks fast. Did you ever figure out what it was?

If it were back east, I'd consider lightening bugs. But given the location and the person viewing, I'd say it was imagination.
