What "old beginner guides" were you using?
Derek Hansen's "The Ultimate Hang" is pretty good.
At 6'2", you are approaching the size where some prefer a 12 ft hammock; most "camping" hammocks are in the 10.5 to 11 foot range.
Garden Gnome that I am, what fits me will not fit you. But there are several "cottage industry" - you won't find their gear in stores - vendors that have a 12 ft option. I'm not saying you need it, and in other forums, there are many posts from 6ft+ hangers who are very happy with their 11 ft choice. Just don't look for the cheapest hammock you can find on Amazon; it will most likely be too short.
The profile on the left doesn't mention your location, but there are "Hammock Hangs" all around the country where you can see other hammock camp setups.
One "trap" is to be concerned about finding "the best". Whatever you start with, if you keep at it for a year or so, you'll probably change to something different later - as with every other pursuit.
The internet is filled with information. Seek it out. Ask here if you come across apparent contradictions.
You asked for a list, but you haven't told us what you already have. A sleeping bag? A ground pad? A tarp? A Budget?
What season are you interested in? What are the usual nighttime temperatures? Will you be car camping in park sites or trekking into the wilderness?
Note that we are headed into winter. Winter Camping is a whole other ballgame - tent or hammock or igloo - from the other three seasons. What I use now, I don't use the other times of the year.
Some vendors are HammockGear, DutchWare, JacksRBetter, Arrowhead Gear, SimplyLightDesigns. Many people start with Hennessy because it is on the low-cost end and is usually discounted a few times a year by REI. But they can run on the short side - so you need to check those specs. You can get exotic$ with a Superior Hammock or wait a year for a custom Majestic Hammock.
Some people prefer a Bridge Hammock - unlike a GE (gathered end) hammock, the bridge hammock has spreader bars at the head and foot ends.
The one mistake is thinking you need to string your hammock up tight to get a flat lie. You need a sag in the body of the hammock so you can rotate a bit diagonal to the center line.
Basically, you need a hammock, a tarp, something to keep you warm from above, something to insulate you from heat loss by air currents from below, and some rigging to suspend your hammock from two trees.
